BURUNDI
Burundi, located in Central East Africa, shares borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Tanzania and is home to more than 8.5 million people. A landlocked country, Burundi is slightly smaller than the state of Maryland. Less than five percent of the population lives in the capital city, Bujumbura, in the northwest part of the country. Most people in the rural areas of Burundi speak only Kirundi, the native language, but French is also spoken, especially in the city. Many who live in the areas bordering the DRC and Tanzania also speak Swahili.
